āThe Curious Case of Benjamin Buttonā appreciation post!! Long post so iām putting it under the cut (the rambles of a mad man).
This is the first David FIncher film i ever saw and i think i watched it when i was round 8 or 9 years old. And i only enjoy it the more i watch it. For being Fincherās second biggest grossing film, and yes i know it won three academy awards ,but i still feel like it doesnāt get talked about enough š. When i see people ranking Fincherās films, this is barley in peoples top 5. Someone called this āFincherās most beautiful filmā (i think it was in a video essay i watched or something) and i wholeheartedly agree.
Alexandre Desplatās score is so gorgeous and paired with Claudio Mirandaās cinematography IS SO FUCKING BEAUTIFUL AHH. Cate Blanchettās performance is fucking insane (she gives my fav performance in this film), along with Brad Pittās, Taraji P. Hensonās and Tilda Swintonās just to name a few. Not to mention Jacqueline Westās costume designs for this film HOLY SHIT!!! because it takes place over a persons life, she gets to have a lot of creative freedom with capturing the fashion of the different decades and SHE KILLS IT EVERY TIME!!!
This film gets compared to āForest Gumpā a lot with Eric Roth writing both films (and yeah the storyās are very similar lmao, but also very different). But my hot take is āBenjamin Buttonā is better than āForest Gumpā, i just personally prefer the more serious story more and, as i have said earlier, the performances are so incredible. (also there is a really good video essay by āEyebrow Cinemaā titled āThe curious case of Forest and Benjaminā on youtube that compares them really nicely if anyone cares :3)
I could go on for literal hours about how it took decades to actually create this film, all the different iterations of the script, all of the different people that were attached to this film over the many years that it was in development such as Steven Spielberg, Spike Jonze, Tom Cruise and literally SO MANY OTHER PEOPLE. Obviously the groundbreaking VFX and CGI which kind of changed the film industry (in-terms of this levael of VFX) are literally so fucking crazy!! not only to give Brad Pitt the appearance of an 80 year old man ALL the way down to like a 17 year old, but also aging and dragging Cate Blanchett both with both VFX and make up! Just to name a few reasons why i love this film so much!!
if you got down this far THANK YOU FOR READING MY RANT!! i just think this film should be talked about a little bit more (in terms of Fincherās filmography anyway) because itās so good š!! also i literally barely scratched the surface of how insane this film was to make and honestly iām not sure how it even got made, but there is a VERY COOL AND EPIC behind the scenes documentary on the blue-ray special features entitled āThe Curious Birth of Benjamin Buttonļæ½ļæ½ that i could not recommend more!! (i donāt think it is online anywhere but if i find it iāll post the link if anyone cares lmao)
#long post#time for a rewatch i think#also fun fact this is Finchers longest film at 2h and 46mins :3#also brad pittās monologue at the end of the film is one of my fav monologues in film!!#the way Fincher and Roth make me care about EVERY SINGLE character no matter how small their role is so amazing#anyway go and watch this film#the curious case of benjamin button#benjamin button#david fincher#brad pitt#cate blanchett

"why should I get invested in shows if they'll just get canceled" I was deeply invested in Heroes (2006) and it was not canceled, it just got really terrible. I also got really invested in the sandwich I had a few weeks ago despite it only lasting like 15 minutes. You must embrace the ephemeral. You must be willing to love things that may not love you back, that might betray you, or that may die an untimely death. As the great philosopher Mr. Mitchell Lee Hedberg said "I'm not gonna stop doing something because of what happens at the end."
#now granted he did die of a drug overdose but you know. one can take the good lessons#anyway. point being i understand being deeply frustrated with the state of the tv and film.#but also we can admit that for every gem canceled there's like three real duds too#idk if you want something that's guaranteed to have a bunch of seasons and you know the ending for go watch shows from the 70s#the number of adults on this site who lack the emotional wherewithal to watch an ongoing narrative is. yikes.#queue

monkey man promo interviews r just like oh yeah dev patel broke multiple bones during the action scenes and he simply shoved a screw into his hand and moved on and the sets kept burning down and the cameras were malfunctioning and we spent half a year editing a segment in a scene and we were trapped in an island for months and the crew was marrying n divorcing each other in total soap opera fashion but whatever we made it because if there's a will there's a way <3
#obv half of these didnt happen but. with how they kept saying everything that couldve gone wrong did go wrong. it might as well#anyways i love watching dev patel nerd out abt the film making process its so sexy#monkey man#monkey man 2024#dev patel

okay so:
the year is 2021. the month is june. the new season of hermitcraft, season 8, has just started, and everything is great! the hermits are all messing around, having fun, building insane things within the first week of the server being active, and generally having a good time. everyone's collected themselves into little factions, pranking each other, and it's all the fun, lighthearted, mostly-vanilla content hermitcraft is known for.
and then the split between minecraft versions 1.18 and 1.19 is announced. the delay of new terrain, and especially of new mobs like the warden, considerably disrupt several of the hermits' plans. but it's fine, they'll figure something out, they're professionals, and it mostly goes unnoticed.
about two weeks later, on november 9th, grian turns to mumbo jumbo in one of his episodes, and asks the famous question that would seal hermitcraft season 8's fate:
"mumbo, is the moon... big?"
suddenly, the fans panic. they search back through videos and streams, and realize that the moon had been abnormally large and stuck in a full-moon phase since october 30th. the Moon Big event has begun.
this is where the roleplay really starts. once the moon's size has been brought up, the hermits start a weird combination of scrambling to figure out why the moon's growing, and how to stop it- but also of ignoring it, hoping it won't be a problem, hoping someone else will deal with it. the moon keeps getting bigger, more hermits start realizing it's going on, and a creeping sense of dread starts to grow. but it's fine. it's fine, right? they do little plotlines like this all the time. they'll figure something out, the moon will go back to normal, and we'll laugh about it when this is all over. it's fine.
and then, blocks start flying away. just floating up out of the ground, and falling right back down! like for a moment, a square meter chunk of dirt has decided it's a ballerina and leaped out of the ground! but it's fine, right? the blocks are coming back. no lasting harm is done. they're going to fix it all... right?
the moon gets bigger. it's growing every day- local hermit weirdguy joe hills measures it every stream. the blocks start flying higher. gravity starts getting... weird, with players getting the slow falling effect at random, and being lifted off of the earth themselves. the players form cults and rituals and whatnot to try and appease the moon, convince it to leave them alone, making plans to escape. nothing works. things keep getting worse, and the moon keeps getting bigger. but it'll be fine. these storylines never leave lasting harm, or at least they never have before. they'll be fine.
and then the blocks stop coming back, just floating into the sky forever. the players have the slow falling effect more than they don't now. the moon is now so big it's visible even during the day, and fills the entire sky at night. they start planning their escapes in earnest, and say their goodbyes. some hermits jump into a void hole in the overworld (it was the centerpiece of their village). some flee to the End, some to the nether, some just fly with elytras and hope they can get far enough away in time. one brave hermit, tango, flies himself to the moon in a futile attempt to blow the whole thing up before it can crash.
but in the end, the moon crashes into the server, and everything they'd built was destroyed. and the whole time, there'd been nothing any of them could've done. season eight was over, a full six months before anyone had expected it to end, and season nine wouldn't start until about three months later. and im still not okay about it.
(here's a cool animatic of the moon's crash! honestly i dont think you need too much hermitcraft knowledge to get the gist)
(also the moon crash happened on the day before my birthday lmao.)
ā¦.
holy shit
#ok ok let me see if i have the timeline correctly:#1) s8 begins in June and so does the new update announcement#2) months go by with no issue (that theyāre aware of)#3) itās in November when they realize the moon has been growing#4) does the moon crash in January???#but gawddam#that is one apocalypse story if Iāve heard of one#also fitting bc i think it was 2021 where we were getting a LOT of asteroid/moon fall movies#idk what was in the air (possibly the pandemic that led to unforced isolation & ppl coped with apocalypse stories)#and somehow that bled through to a Minecraft server???? somehow?????#wild#this also reminds me of an apocalypse movie i watched with a friend called ā3 DĆasā#very good movie btw#highly recommend (it is a Spanish only film which i donāt think will be an issue bc subtitles)#anyway#asks#smp 101 with gumy#hermitcraft edition!

way back in like. march?? I took a stab at writing some kind of kabitserye type of story but it was a mess: it kept veering off into murder mystery drama territory because I was reading a lot of murder mystery novels around then and it Wasn't Good because I hadn't tried writing mysteries, let alone murder mysteries, before lmao
I did write a handful of short mystery stories since then, so next year I might take a stab at this idea again now that I'm no longer jumping head first into a genre pool I don't know how to swim in :)
#now for the part where i have to fight off the impulse to write in some b movie horror elements because ive been thinking about#reanimator a lot lately. ehghghh. thank god for the editing process. to wrangle my thoughts into a linear state of creating#anyway i read an article. interview? on the popularity of infidelity dramas in the philippines and it was poetry to me#and i also enjoy the really intense social melodrama in lino brocka's films. specifically the appearance of morality to cover up/justify#ugly behavior. or like. man i'm tired. whatever was going on in murder by tsismis. that's the thing. someday i'll get more into it#and post excerpts from the actual analysis of the film that actually explains the dynamic im talking around here#komiks tag#original tag#also there's some. vague lingering thought about ikaw lamang in here. not in a way that matters#but in a 'the first episode that i saw was not the first episode of the drama itself and it made me go. oh everyone has rotten vibes'#which is not. well. if you saw ikaw lamang then you know the characters. this is not the takeaway from the show. HOWEVER#i did invent a whole different show in my head between that and when the next episode aired. so.#fake ikaw lamang. ikaw lamang if it wasn't even remotely like ikaw lamang. on the topic of ikaw lamang here's a cringe story for you#still following along. BEFORE i had watched the show. i saw a notebook with franco on it but i didn't recognize the character#i just saw jake in a suit and went oh! cool! i will now Buy This!#anyway i still have the notebook lmao

Yāall are aware we probably have to keep it in the top 10 overall into at least the 19th right? One business day after initial intended marketed advertised release supposedly. Then we should be good unless Mark says otherwise.
#donāt count your chickens before they hatch this is amazon we need to keep up the momentum since itās already started#despite what public platforms and Mark says that this isnāt malicious Iām not buying it I think it was intended#industries actively donāt want indie people succeeding usually and theyāll pull stunts like this easily#or I should say industry execs to be specific and CEOs probably#wouldnāt want to have to start paying a bunch of indie creators fair pay when you can underpay already known companies and brand employees#but thereās a deeper conversation to be had about that in a different day and post and Iām not well educated on it#I hope Markiplier iron lung doesnāt get stuck in production limbo please fingers crossed we make this happen#this really is exposing how scummy the film industry can be thou which is a fascinating look into how bad stuff is#anyway go watch edge of sleep legally if you can!#idk any sites to watch it otherwise atm for people region locked out who wanna talk about it to help support the show#mine#op#the edge of sleep#teos

Voice actors are NOT the same as actors.
It takes a specific kind of skill-set and training to be able to warp and meld the voice. It takes a certain kind of talent and dedication to hone that talent into the ability to meld the voice and invoke emotion with one's voice alone. Actors are used to using their voice secondarily to their body language and their facial expressions. It's all mirrored back on camera. They do have nuance. But it's a different kind of nuance and a different kind of training to produce that nuance.
Voice actors might get their likeness transposed on their character's design, and maybe their mannerisms might seep into the character's animation. But when it's all said and done: their presence is in their voice. They are bringing a character to life, showing that emotion in their voice, trying to keep a specific accent, drawl, pitch, tone in that voice and keep it consistent for their recording sessions.
The voice actor is like a classically trained musician who can play first chair in a competitive, world-renown orchestra. The actor (who fills the voice actor's role) is like a moot who played violin in beginner and intermediate high school orchestra and thinks they can get into Juilliard with that 2-4 years of experience.
This doesn't mean that the HS orchestra moot can't play. They can even be really good at it. Maybe they won competitions and sat first chair. But they are not in the same league as the person who's been training their whole lives and lives and breathes to hone their craft using the instrument and all of the training they've ever acquired to perfect it. They are not meant for the same roles. They are not in the same caliber. You do not hire the HS equivalent when you want to play complex music in a competitive orchestra.
Actors are not the same as voice actors.
And furthermore, actors - especially big name actors - taking the roles of animated characters for big budget films or TV pilots makes no sense anyways when - at least in the case of TV pilots - there's not a point to hiring a big budget actors anyways. That money could be used elsewhere (like paying your animators), and the talent that is brought onto the screen for X character could then be hired on to voice said character no recasting required.
I wouldn't say voice acting as a profession is in danger exactly, but it's certainly being disrespected and overlooked for celebrity clout, and this has ALWAYS been an issue. Shoot, even Robin Williams knew that much - which is why he tried so hard not to be used as a marketing chess piece for Aladdin and got royally pissed off when it happened anyways. People shouldn't go to any movie (but especially not animated films) because "oh famous actor is in it". People should go because it's a good movie and the voice acting is good.
People who honest to god think that voice actors are replaceable because "oh well anyone can voice act" or "I like xyz celebrity so naturally it'll be good" ... Honestly I just wish you'd reassess your priorities because you're missing the point and are part of the problem.
Voice Actors ā Actors.
#(i am incredibly passionate about this)#(and seeing celebrity voice actors in what should be a voice actor's role completely burns my buns it doesn't matter WHO it is)#(hemsworth as optimus? someone tell me one good reason why they couldn't get a good v/a to replace mr. cullen properly for the future)#(ben shwartz as sonic? dude literally isn't even a good voice actor OR actor anyways-)#(- A N D jason griffith AND my boy roger craig smith are still RIGHT HERE)#(jason griffith IN PARTICULAR would have pulled back SO many sonic fans that went to watch the film anyways. if not /more/.)#(and on top of that he has the same tonality and energy they tried to force this moshmo to try and emulate anyways so GET THE REAL THING)#(chris pratt as mario? i can at least defend /him/ and say that barring his failure to do a NY accent consistently he wasn't terrible)#(but mario's new voice actor could've been used instead and people would've clearly appreciated that WAY more)#(vanessa hudgens as sunny starscout in mlp g5's pilot movie? literally why. they replace her and hitch's va in the show.)#(don't even get me started on the concept of hiring celebrity singers to do musical theatre roles or not letting musical theatre singers-)#(-dub the celebrity voice actors you just HAD to hire for your film bc you're so worried about not getting enough clout to get ppl in seats#(that you're putting it all in this (1) big name hire bc turns out that you have no faith in your writing ability much less-)#(-animation as a medium.)#(and no before anyone says anything : no this is not me saying that ALL celebrity voice castings are bad.)#(there are some that aren't that bad and others that are actually pretty good.)#(i especially appreciate it when actors are damn well aware they aren't voice actors and try to LEARN from voice coaches-)#(-and/or their va predecessors if applicable.)#(that does not change the fact that the celebrity shouldn't have been hired just because the film wanted to have bragging clout-)#(-oh look at this FAMOUS PERSON we were able to hire ā yeah ok. sure wendy. i want to know if this film is quality or not.)#(and 9/10 times the SECOND there is money spent on a non voice actor to voice the main character especially)#(that usually means somewhere along the way animation IS going to get shafted. if not w the animators themselves then in the way of-)#(-the actual animation itself and ESPECIALLY the screenwriting because it's especially been so dogshit lately even before the strike.)#(a celebrity being hired to fill a voice actor's role is such an immediate red flag to me and it is VERY rare that i get to be proven wrong

so korjaamo was absolute fire tonight jesus. definitely my favourite of his gigs i've been to š
but i have something on my mind and i'm a bit conflicted.
i was maybe idk seventh row or something, not like super close to the stage but closer than the middle. i didn't take any pics this time, but a lot of people around me did. and multiple people filmed entire songs, autiomaa in particular. and that moment made me a bit.. sad? because for me, this time, experiencing autiomaa was me trying to focus on him but having 15 phones in my direct eyeline filming the entire song. and for that song in particular it felt a bit wrong, you know? (shoutout to those who waved their phone lights in the audience, that was cool)
now the reason why i feel conflicted is because i get it. i get wanting to capture that moment, i really do. and i know how much it means to fans who haven't had the chance to see him live and maybe never will, i get that this is a way to connect. but that's exactly why i feel so two ways about it: i recognise that getting that song on video might be a way to immortalise the moment for someone, and maybe that video serves as a way for someone else, who wasn't there at all, to connect with him. but at the same time, the sea of phone screens filming the entire song, created a disconnect between him, the song and me, someone who was there.
and that song in particular feels to me like a moment where i wish the audience would just... be there for him, with him, in the moment. but then again, last time i saw him less than a month ago i too took a couple of pics of autiomaa. so do i really have a leg to stand on.
i guess where i'm going with this is two things: 1) i wish we could learn to let go of this need to film gigs so much because it does kind of interrupt the live experience, and learn to let go of the fomo, and 2) i wish we could go back to how it was like 20 years ago when artists used to drop pro shot, pro edited live dvd's with cool documentary extras and stuff from like every other tour or something. or official live videos of individual songs. i wish that it wasn't on fans in the audience to capture and convey the moments to the fans who can't be there.
#i also ended up in the background of like 15 selfies during the actual gig which to me personally was incredibly strange#like why are you taking selfies during the actual show? i don't get it#anyway i'm not trying to judge people taking pics of artists or filming songs#god knows i watched ig live streams of the first euro tour#but like i feel like collectively maybe we need to try to learn to let go a little bit#and i include myself in that#kƤƤrijƤ
